La Nina was stationary over the southeastern part of the United States over the past three years and has finally moved from over the region, according to a recent Insurance Journal article.
While La Nina is not the sole reason for the severe weather that has hit the southeast recently, it tends to bring more frequent hurricanes and tornado outbreaks to the region it’s in. La Nina brought several tornado outbreaks to the southeast totaling around $11.7 billion in damages across several states.
Hurricanes Ian, Nicole, Sally, and Zeta all occurred during La Nina, with Hurricane Ian being one of the most damaging hurricanes in US history. Hurricane Ian alone caused $112.9 million in damages.
Along with La Nina, climate change has also played a part in the catastrophic weather events that have taken place. Businesses should make sure their property insurance plans are up to date as more extreme weather can be expected even with La Nina being gone.
