Cyber attacks and data breaches have become the conversation of choice for many in recent weeks. Government entities are no exception. According to this article, in March, the Texas Department of Insurance announced that it experienced a data breach.
The web application managing the state’s workers’ compensation information was compromised. The department is sending letters to anyone who had a new claim filed between March 2019 and January 2022. Those that may have filed a claim as far back as 2006 may still qualify for credit monitoring.
The types of data at risk include names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and parts or all of social security numbers. In answer to the breach, the application was taken offline, and the department worked with a forensics company to verify that no information had been misused to date. The department states it has now fixed the issue.
Whether state entity or private, cyber-attacks are a genuine threat to business. Private companies have the opportunity to protect themselves in many different ways, including cyber liability insurance.
