Veterans Day always falls on November 11. This year that will be on a Monday. We wanted to take a moment to share with you some interesting facts about Veterans Day in preparation for this holiday.
In 1968, Congress moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. However, November 11 is a historically significant date to many Americans as it ended World War I. Congress formally returned to November 11 as the observance date in 1978.
The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year at Arlington National Cemetery. A tradition-rich ceremony is conducted at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There are regional sites throughout the United States that also hold ceremonies. Check with the US Department of Veterans Affairs for more information.
Veterans Day is intended to thank and honor all who served honorably in the military – living and dead – whether in wartime or peace. This day is primarily intended to thank living Veterans for their service. Did you hear about the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act? The law requires that the President issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe a two-minute national moment of silence on Veterans Day at 1:11 p.m. Central Standard Time. President Obama signed the act on October 7, 2016.
